Thinking About Positano? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t.
Published about 20 hours ago • 3 min read
Stop Going to Positano (Seriously, It's Time)
Hello friends!
Alright, let’s talk about the Amalfi Coast. You’ve probably heard all the hype, right? Stunning cliffs, colorful buildings, those dreamy views of the sea... but let’s be real, Positano? Augh.
I cringe every time someone asks me about it, and if you’re one of those people who’s been dying to check it off your bucket list, I get it. I did it, too. Once. And honestly? I don’t want to do it again.
Look at all those people 😭
Here’s why:
1. Crowds, Crowds, and More Crowds
If you think you’re going to find some peace and quiet in Positano, I’ve got news for you: It’s a logistical nightmare. Summer? Forget it.
You can’t even walk down the street without dodging a line of people and the occasional car trying to squeeze through. Imagine trying to stroll down a charming little alley... except it’s not an alley, it’s the main road, and there’s a bus coming at you. Not the vibe, right?
2. The Beach? Eh...
Let’s talk about the beach. Spoiler alert: It’s nothing unique. It’s a pebble beach, which, sure, Italy’s coastlines are full of. But why spend your precious time on a beach that’s just... fine? The true beach lovers know the deal: Positano is not winning any awards for its shore.
3. Beach Lounging for $100?
You want an umbrella and chair? That’ll be $100+, please. Oh, and don’t forget the reservation. Because heaven forbid you just show up and, you know, enjoy the view.
The prices are insane, and it's just another reminder that Positano is more about charging you for the location than providing any real value.
4. Food & Drinks Are Pricey and Meh
Okay, okay, we get it - you're paying for the atmosphere of the Amalfi Coast. But, honestly, when the food quality is slipping and the cocktails are overpriced, is it really worth it?
If you’re just there to splurge, then go ahead, live your best (expensive) life. But if you're hoping for quality, you’re better off looking elsewhere. Positano has become a tourist trap, and you’re paying for the view, not the meal.
Alternatives? Please Don’t Go to Ravello
You’ve heard of Ravello, right? It’s supposed to be this charming escape near the Amalfi Coast. Except, surprise! It’s just as crowded and touristy as Positano. You’ll get the same overpriced drinks and crowded streets, just in a different location.
What to Do Instead?
Here’s the deal: if you’ve got the Amalfi Coast on your bucket list, go once, just don’t expect to go back for the right reasons. There are SO many other coastal gems in Italy that are just as stunning (if not more!) and way less crowded. Think Puglia, Sardinia, Calabria, or Sicily. Trust me, they’ve got it all - beautiful beaches, charming towns, actually incredible food and you can actually breathe while you’re there.
A stunning beach in Calabria
Next Up: The Cilento Coast
But hold tight, because we’re doing something a little different this month. We’re heading to the Cilento Coast. Never been, never even driven through, but I’ve read great things. It’s located just south of the Amalfi Coast but without the throngs of tourists.
Plus, it’s a place Italians actually visit (a huge selling point for me).
Stay tuned for the update - let’s see if this hidden gem is as lovely as it sounds. We’re going to check it out during shoulder season, so no crazy crowds.
The Takeaway:
If you’re thinking of heading to the Amalfi Coast... maybe think again. You’ve got better options out there. And hey, when in doubt, try somewhere new. Take the road less traveled - it’s probably less crowded and more fun.
So... what’s your take? Do you still want to tick off Positano?
