The worst “Instagram-famous” spots we've visited

What the photos don’t show: crowds, fences & chaos

Hi friends,

Alright, let’s talk about something we’ve all fallen for: those shiny, perfect Instagram photos that make a place look like a dreamy slice of heaven. But sometimes? The reality is… not so picture-perfect.

From jam-packed crowds to overpriced nonsense and literal fences blocking the view - you get there, and you’re like, “Wait, this is it?”

So today, we’re calling out a few of the worst “Instagrammable” spots we’ve been to and giving you some way better alternatives that are actually worth your time.

Let’s dive in.

1. Zakynthos Shipwreck Viewpoint (Navagio Beach)

The hype: Iconic cliffside view of a rusted shipwreck in dreamy turquoise water.
The reality: A fenced-off viewing area, long lines, and sometimes you even have to pay some random person to enter. Plus, it’s way too crowded to enjoy.

Better idea: Book a boat tour and see the shipwreck from the water. The view is 10x more impressive, and you don’t have to stand in a dusty queue to see it.
Even better: Check out these underrated viewpoints in Zakynthos that don’t come with the human traffic jam.

2. Alberobello (During the Day)

The hype: Cute little white trulli houses in a fairy-tale village.
The reality: Souvenir shops galore and more tour groups than trulli. It’s a vibe… but not the relaxing one you're imagining.

Better idea: Go at sunset or during shoulder season when the crowds thin out and the lighting is extra dreamy.
Wanna level up? Head toward Pozzo Via Duca Degli Abruzzi (plug it into Google Maps). It’s quieter, more authentic, and still ridiculously photogenic.

3. Prague Christmas Markets

The hype: Twinkly lights, magical stalls, warm mulled wine, pure holiday joy.
The reality: A wall of people, overpriced snacks, and wine that tastes like it was brewed in a hurry. (And I say this with love - I’m half Czech!)

Better idea: Pop in for a quick look and then get out.
Try this instead: Head to smaller Czech towns like Český Krumlov or Olomouc for actual cozy vibes.
Or go high: Grab a drink at Terasa U Prince for a beautiful rooftop view of the market—no crowds, just good views.

4. Venice’s Grand Canal (Midday Madness)

The hype: Romantic gondola rides and picturesque canal views.
The reality: Crowds thick enough to make you question your life choices. You’ll spend more time dodging selfie sticks than soaking up the beauty.

Better idea: Wake up early (sorry, I know 😅) and explore the Grand Canal at sunrise - it’s magical before the crowds hit.
Explore beyond: Venice has over 400 bridges - many of them are in quiet neighborhoods that are just as gorgeous (and far more whimsical) than the tourist-heavy Grand Canal zone.
