Explore More, Spend Less: 5 Countries for Savvy Travelers

Adventures of ACE

Notes From the Road

We get it - everyone dreams of seeing Paris, Rome, or Tokyo. But let’s be real: your wallet won’t love them back.

If you’re tired of paying tourist prices for a mediocre croissant in a crowded café full of English-speaking tourists, it’s time to branch out.

As experienced travelers who’ve at one point spent way too much on overpriced souvenirs, we’re here to share 5 countries where you can live your best travel life without sacrificing your entire savings.

These lesser-traveled gems are the real deal, and your bank account won’t go into shock when you return home.

1. Thailand

We know, we know... this isn't exactly a lesser-known place to travel, but Thailand STILL remains a go-to destination for savvy travelers looking to stretch their dollars.

Budget accommodation is abundant, with hostels and guesthouses ranging from $15 to $30 per night (or less if you're particularly flexible about where you sleep).

We stayed at this newly renovated hotel near BKK airport for just $29!

The super low cost of food is a major draw, with Michelin-quality meals available for around $2 to $3.

Budgeting in Thailand can become tougher depending on where you visit, so if you're extra cautious, steer clear of places like Phuket or Krabi.

2. North Macedonia

As one of the most affordable countries in Europe, it unquestionably flies under the radar for most tourists. You can find budget accommodation in Skopje, the capital, for around $20 per night, and a hearty meal at a local restaurant will cost you just $8.

Even with plenty of attractions like Lake Ohrid and ancient monasteries, you won't find yourself paying an arm and a leg for admission.

This hidden Balkan gem offers incredible value for travelers who want a mix of history, culture, stunning landscapes, and something other than Croatia!

3. Laos

Laos is a rising Southeast Asia destination, offering a wealth of experiences at budget-friendly prices. If you thought Thailand was affordable, you'll be blown away by Laos.

You can stay in a comfortable guesthouse or hostel for as little as $10 a night and enjoy a local meal for under $3.

We booked two rooms for four nights at this hotel in Luang Prabang (with a pool) for just $560 🤯

With cheap tuk-tuks and shared buses, you can easily explore the cities without spending a fortune on taxis or ride-sharing.

4. Turkey

Turkey's been getting some heat recently for becoming more expensive for tourists. But our position still stands, primarily for one reason: it REALLY depends on where you go in Turkey.

No, historic penthouses in Istanbul or luxury cave hotels in Cappadocia will not be cheap. The country combines rich history, culture, and delicious cuisine - all at incredibly affordable prices… but in less touristy areas.

Traditional Turkish meals, such as kebabs or mezes, cost just $5–$7. We've stayed in private rooms for $30 per night and even rented a private house with a pool for $99 per night in Turkey.

So, don't listen to the angry tourists who just don't know how to find good deals. It is definitely still possible to visit Turkey on a budget!

5. Slovakia

Slovakia offers the perfect balance of adventure, affordability, and the comforts of Western Europe - all without stretching your budget.

You can find a private room in Bratislava for around $50 per night, and a meal at a local restaurant will set you back just $10. Plus, it’s an ideal alternative to Prague, which has seen prices skyrocket in recent years for tourists.

For outdoor enthusiasts, hiking in the Tatra Mountains is free, and you can enjoy stunning views without spending a dime.

With the charm of an underdog and a vibrant cultural scene, Slovakia is an unique destination for travelers seeking both value and character.
