A Case for Going Back to Basics
Hello fellow adventurers,
We need to talk about Airbnb.
It used to be the gold standard for staying like a local - quirky places, real connections with hosts, and prices that didn’t make you want to cry.
But now? Not so much. And honestly, people are always surprised to hear this, but we rarely use Airbnb when we travel anymore.
Let’s break down why it’s not all it’s cracked up to be, and if there’s even a chance it can make a comeback.
1. Airbnb Used to Be Real. Now, It’s Just Business.
Remember when staying at an Airbnb meant chatting with your host, getting those local tips, and feeling like you were part of the neighborhood? Yeah, now it’s mostly just property managers running the show. The “local” experience? Not so much. More like staying at a hotel... but without the comfy towels.
2. It’s Often More Expensive Than Hotels.
After all the cleaning fees, service charges, and surprise costs that pop up at checkout, Airbnb can actually be way pricier than a hotel. And at least with a hotel, you know exactly what you’re paying for. No “mystery” charges to make you second-guess your life choices.
3. Airbnb Is Pricing Locals Out of Their Own Cities.
Airbnb has inflated housing markets in a lot of major cities, leaving locals scrambling for affordable places to live. Is it time to put some limits on short-term rentals? Maybe some caps to stop Airbnb from turning neighborhoods into overpriced vacation zones? Just a thought.
4. Hotels Are More Sustainable.
When it comes to supporting local communities and being sustainable, hotels usually have it figured out better. From waste reduction programs to supporting local economies, hotels tend to have a more positive impact. Airbnb? Well, sometimes it just fuels gentrification and drives up rents. Not exactly what we (travelers) are aiming for, right?
5. Cleaning Fees and “Expectations” Are Out of Control.
Cleaning fees? Outrageous. And then you’re expected to clean up before you leave? Don’t even get us started on the reviews. Some people complain about not having a phone charging station by the bed - are we really doing this? Come on, people, let’s bring it back to the days when Airbnb felt simple and authentic.
6. Can We Make Airbnb Less Fussy?
What if we could go back to when Airbnb was just fun, laid-back, and a real way to experience a place? No crazy fees. No inflated expectations. Let’s bring back the charm.
In the end, if you want something authentic and affordable, you might want to skip the Airbnb hassle and book a local hotel. Trust us, it’ll be just as good, if not better.

Booking.com consistently offers the best prices. It’s also incredibly easy to filter through hotels, especially if you're specifically looking for apartment or guesthouse-style accommodations. Their selection of privately owned listings has skyrocketed in the past few years, making them the best alternative to Airbnb.
